Master Bath Remodel

The Master Bathroom is finally complete! It has felt like it's taken us forever to finish, but we are so happy with the way the room turned out! We're even more excited to be able to use that room now (not to mention, I have my closet back!).

Here are a couple of before pictures:

Ugh, not inviting at all!

And here are the after photos: The wall color is Chocolate Sprinkle...I promise that it's not Maroon. I'm an Aggie and all, but I couldn't live with a Maroon room!

Travis made the medicine cabinet door, and I drew the design on the glass and etched it. We didn't want to have a solid slab of door, but also didn't want to be able to clearly see our toiletries. I'm happy with the way the glass turned out.

We're still in the "honeymoon" phase with this bathroom. I know that sounds weird, but I'm still getting little flutters when I shower or even walk into that room. I love it! It's my favorite room in the house right now and until the kitchen gets it's makeover, it might stay that way.

Toddler Time

I forgot my camera at home today!! Oh, no. I did wish that I had brought it because Elizabeth danced her little heart out today at Toddler Time. They do the same little dances every week with a few different ones, but there are always the standard dances with "moves". Well, this week, Elizabeth started doing some of the moves! Albeit rough moves compared to some of the other kids, but I was so proud of her. She was smiling from ear to ear and having a blast!

You'll just have to trust me since there's no hard evidence! I'm putting the camera back into my purse where it belongs as we speak. No forgetting it next week!

French Onion Soup & Our 3rd Anniversary

Since Travis had been traveling this week and it was our anniversary, I wanted to have something special made for supper. I settled on French Onion Soup from The Pioneer Woman. You can find the full recipe and her post here. I've never had French Onion Soup before, but let me tell you, it was pretty darn good!

You'll need 4 large or 6 medium yellow onions. I had a mix and some of my onions were on the small side, so I used 6.

You have to slice them thin, so I used this bad boy that I got from Santa for Christmas. It's an awesome mandoline and it'll take your finger off. It almost happened to me.

Slice the onions in half and peel.

Slice thin. A little less than 1/4" worked well for me.

Melt a stick of butter in a heavy pot. I used my cast iron pot because it has to go into the oven.

Throw all of the onions in, cover, and let the onions cook on the stove top in the butter for 20 minutes. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 400 degrees.

After 20 minutes, pop the pot into the oven, but leave the lid partially open so the onions will brown. Leave them in the oven for 1 hour, stirring at least once to make sure they're not burning or sticking.

You'll also need a generous cup of dry white wine, if you are so inclined. I was. So not only did I use a generous cup in the soup, but I poured myself a glass (or two), too!

Here's the rest of the team: wine, Worchestershire sauce (a few dashes, whatever suits your fancy), four cups of beef broth, four cups of chicken broth, and two cloves of garlic, minced.

You'll also need a few slices of French bread. Just butter one side and stick them under the broiler for a minute to get nice and toasty. But, you may want to wait until you're closer to serving so your bread won't be cold like mine was. Oops!

When an hour is up, take the pot out of the oven, stir the onions, scrape all of the good stuff off of the bottom of the pot and, with the burner off, pour in the wine. Turn the burner back on to medium heat and let simmer for five minutes.

Then add the remaining ingredients and stir. As you can see, my pot almost wasn't big enough, so I stirred carefully!
You want to let this simmer for 30 to 45 minutes, uncovered. The liquid will reduce to a much more manageable amount. Not to mention, your house will smell delicious! The first thing Travis said when Elizabeth and I met him outside was that we smelled like a restaurant. That's a pretty high complement if you ask me!

To serve, ladle the soup into a bowl, plop a couple of pieces of toasted bread in and top with cheese. The recipe calls for Gruyere, but I substituted the more budget friendly Swiss cheese. The recipe also says to put this back under the broiler so that the cheese will melt and bubble, but we were hungry, and there was no time for things like that!

It was truly a wonderful soup! So good, and really didn't taste a whole lot like onions at all. It definitely fulfilled my desire to have something special on our anniversary!

Toddler Time

This morning, Elizabeth & I got back into our Wednesday morning routine of going to Toddler time at the Library. She had a really good time today. There were more kids closer to her age group and fewer "older" kids, which I kinda liked.

Last night, before I went to bed, I built Elizabeth a castle out of her blocks so she'd have something fun to wake up to. She loved it! I loved the look on her face. Priceless! She had so much fun knocking it down. I was just glad it didn't fall while I was sleeping and scare the daylights out of me! This may become a regular treat if she continues to be a good girl at nap and bed time.

Here's a picture of the kids listening to the story. Today, they didn't sit still much. Almost all of the kids were up and about, playing as they listened.

Oops, I forgot to rotate this picture! Here's Elizabeth dancing to one of the songs they played. She'd much rather free-style than do anything with "moves"! Oh, well, she's got plenty of moves of her own!

Today's stories were about ducks, so the craft today was to make a duck out of a paper plate. I thought it was such a neat craft. I need to find more of these types of things to do with her. I have so much craft stuff that Kate & I accumulated over the years. She and I had a good time making the duck together. She would even "quack" with me when I asked her what sound a duck made. Too cute, she's really growing up!

Toddler Time was much more enjoyable for her and I both today. There were fewer kids and more in her age group. All of the kids were super nice today and I'm even starting to talk to more of the other "moms" there. I say mom in quotes because some are nannies and some are grandmothers... So, to hold us over until next Wednesday, we checked out a few books and we're having a good time reading!

Menu Plan Monday

After living on mostly leftovers last week, I'm ready to get back into the swing of things! Travis will be gone for two days, so Elizabeth and I can clean out the fridge while he's gone. Here's what I'm planning for this week:

  • Black-eyed peas & cornbread (Today! We didn't have them on the 1st, so better late than never, right?)
  • French Onion Soup from The Pioneer Woman
  • Meatloaf; mashed potatoes; green beans
I think that's all for now. Have a great week!

My Husband Rocks Friday

Hmm...he seems to be taking over my blog lately! We've been busy all week trying to finish up our Master Bathroom remodel, so blogging has taken a backseat. But, don't worry, I'll get pictures and a post up soon!

My husband rocks because this week, he saved us a big chunk of money by lying the tile floor in our master bathroom and closet! We weren't sure if we wanted to install it ourselves or hire someone, but after hearing the cost, we decided to jump right in! By the time the first section of flooring was finished, he was tiling like a pro! Within two days, he had the floor laid (with a little help from me) and all of the baseboards installed, too!

I'm getting used to having such a handy man around! I love you, Trav!

My Husband Rocks Friday-Christmas Edition

My husband rocks because he's good at building things. My mom wanted to do something different with the stockings this year, so Travis (along with my Dad, brother, and sister's boyfriend) built two stocking stands. Mom had the idea, but it was up to Travis and Dad to figure out how to build it. She wanted to use scrap metal and most of it is. I even helped a little, mostly by laying out the stars and painting.

They look good, don't they?

These are just the most recent of Travis' fabrications. He's good at building so many different things, that I just can't list them all! Whatever it is that needs to be built, he's my guy!

Merry Christmas & I love you, Trav!
